ficlet 3: Goodbye

#3. Wow, I'm doing pretty good with these so far. The last one is the hardest though, so I keep putting it off. This one is for [livejournal.com profile] jain who wanted Sirius/Remus with some mention of moving on. I've never been very good at Sirius/Remus, so I hope this is okay. It's set post-OotP and pre-HBP, so there are no spoilers, but maybe a bit of a hint of what might come. Kind of. This one is sad.

There are many different ways to say goodbye to someone. Remus figures he's experienced about one hundred and forty-three different goodbyes - so far. He knows better than to stop expecting people to say goodbye to him. He's always been the one people leave behind.

He's said a lot of goodbyes to Sirius over the years. Between classes, meals, on the Hogwarts Express at the end of a school year, before leaving for work, after Sirius was sent to Azkaban, after Remus found him again. The list goes on and on in Remus's mind as he folds another ragged t-shirt with an obscene slogan on it and puts it in a never to be used again dresser.

His favourite way to say goodbye to Sirius was always with kisses. Slow, long, playful kisses where his fingers tangled in Sirius's hair or lit upon his hips, where laughter was traded between them as easily as the goodbye. They were always short, until later goodbyes. Those were the best goodbyes as far as Remus is concerned.

Until very recently, the worst goodbyes were accompanied by screaming or complete silence. He and Sirius had them both, entirely too often. Remus rests his hand on Sirius's bedspread, his head bowed slightly. The pain they caused each other was often necessary, but never welcome.

Lily always said the two of them were like oil and water - they shouldn't mix, but they couldn't stay apart.

But now, Remus knows that those goodbyes are not the worst. There was always the chance of saying hello again no matter how acrimonious their parting. This goodbye, a silent one because there is no way for Sirius to respond, is the very worst that could possibly happen.

It's a goodbye Remus hopes to never have to experience with anyone again.
