yes, I'm doing double crack_van duty this month. yes, I am insane
Fandom: Callum Keith Rennie/Hugh Dillon RPF
Pairing: CKR/HD
Author on LJ:
dayse
Author's website: Northwest Passage
Why this must be read: I'm starting off with
dayse for a number of reasons. She's very fun to read, her fic is accessible, and it's always well-written. I've known her for years and I really think she's hitting her stride with CRK/HD fic so I'm more than happy to rec her story Anytime You Do Anything as the first CKR/HD crack_van rec.
The song 'Anything' is a hidden track on the the third Headstones album 'Smile and Wave.' For quite some time, it was believed that Callum actually sang on that track along with Hugh. Very recently, Hugh has finally cleared up that rumour and no, it's not actually Callum. That hasn't stopped fandom from still taking that rumour as a fun plot point.
Anytime You Do Anything is about the recording of that song and how Callum finds it impossible to blow Hugh off no matter what time of day or night. The story is fun and snappy and has a fantastic first time sex scene in it. Dayse gives a wonderful Callum voice and this story is no exception.
Hugh’s sitting on a stool behind the glass, but the door’s open so he isn’t recording. The microphone half-obscures his face, and he barely looks up when Callum walks in. There’s already a thick haze of smoke around his head.
Callum stays on his side, makes a show of looking around the room. “Trent dead?”
A half smirk and Hugh flicks hazy eyes over at Callum, the question right there without being said out loud.
“Tim lodged in something? Dale lost at sea? Because there better be a good fucking reason you called me here at three fucking A.M., Dillon, or I will – I’ll – “ Callum stops mid-rant because Hugh’s just sitting and smoking in front of that damn mic, not moving from his stool, and he looks more mellow than Callum’s ever seen him. And oh fucking shit what if someone did die?
Callum’s voice drops a few notches. “Everything okay?”
Hugh raises a hand up to his mouth, removes the cigarette, and blows out a waft of smoke. “I got this song. New thing.” And Callum’s not sure if that answers his question or not. “S’good. Kinda different, mostly done. Hit the button on the soundboard, man, the one that says ‘track 1’, then hit ‘play’.”
Callum sighs, and he puts a cigarette in his mouth before he does what Hugh says. He’s been in the studio with Hugh before, so his fingers find the buttons easily, and he takes a step back to light up as music fills the small room.
There aren’t any vocals yet, and Callum glances Hugh’s way to see him swaying a bit to the beat, his eyes closed as his mouth moves without sound. And shit. Why does he keep doing this to himself? Callum picks an empty off the floor and flicks ash into it, pressing his lips together, doesn’t look up again.
When the song ends, Hugh’s tapping on the mic to get his attention, “Well? What’d you think?”
“Not enough use of the word ‘fuck’. Can I go back to sleep now?”
