I gotta do something other than my work, right?

Feel free to skip.

“Dr. Timberlake?”

Justin looked up from the thick book he was reading, making out a blurry figure in the doorway of the closet he called an office. He slid his glasses back on his face and the man in the doorway came into clear view.

“Yes, may I help you?”

“I hope so. My name is Dr. Daniel Jackson.” Daniel walked into the office, holding out his hand.

Justin half-stood up, looking at him with wide eyes. “The Dr. Daniel Jackson?”

Daniel winced slightly as he shook Justin’s hand. “Yes. That’s me.”

Justin sat back down, gesturing at the only other chair in the office. “Please. Sit.”

“Thank you,” Daniel sat down, studying Justin. “23 years old, two PhDs, 32 languages, and a specialization in Mesopotamian culture.”

“So you’re familiar with my tagline,” Justin said dryly. “You forgot the child genius part.”

“It’s pretty impressive,” Daniel said. “Most child geniuses, which I did remember, don’t go into this field. They tend to stick to math and the pure sciences.”

“You go with what you’re good at,” Justin said coolly. He’d heard all of this before. “For me that’s languages. Mind you astrophysics and higer math are a couple of my hobbies.”

Daniel chuckled lightly. “I’m here to offer you a job, Dr. Timberlake. And I can promise you an office that wasn’t once a utility closet.”

“I may be their golden boy,” Justin gestured at the office. “But I’m still just an adjunct and they don’t give office space to adjunts.”

“I remember all too well,” Daniel said wistfully.

“What kind of job are you offering me?” asked Justin. “Last I heard, you’d been laughed out of archeology.”

“And you were what…14 then?”

“I was 13,” Justin said primily. “And I was working on my doctoral dissertation in ancient Sumerian culture. I kept an eye on what the Egyptologists were doing. Still do actually.”

“I need a linguist on my team who can read cuniform, ancient Phonecian dialects, and Babylonian. At the same time.”

Justin leaned forward, his eyes gleaming. “What have you found?”

Daniel reached into his pocket and pulled out a polaroid. “I can’t tell you where I found it, but I can tell you that it’s authentic.”

“Holy shit,” Justin breathed out slowly, his eyes wide. “It’s a temple door. There haven’t been any temples found before. Where did you find this?”

Daniel shook his head. “I can’t tell you that until you sign a secrecy agreement. This is military, Dr. Timberlake. What you learn, if you choose to sign on, can never be published. No one can find out.”

“So I sign a secrecy agreement, come work for you, and I get this,” Justin gestured at the polaroid. “But I don’t get any credit?”

“Right,” Daniel nodded. “Trust me, Dr. Timberlake. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

“Can I get a coffeepot in my office?” asked Justin with a smile.

Daniel smiled back and nodded. “Yeah. That can be arranged.”

Justin stood up again and held out his hand. “Call me Justin.”

Daniel stood up as well, shaking Justin’s hand. “I’m assuming this is a yes, Justin?”

“Hell yeah,” Justin grinned. “Tell me more while we go to get a drink. Your treat.”

Daniel laughed and shook his head a little. “All right. Lead the way, Dr. Timberlake.”

And if any of you actually read that...you deserve a cookie.
