I CAN MISS TODAY!

i've missed one day of classes so far. i've been so very good. i can't miss thursday.

i have to go to talk to mommy about this.

(and yes i still ask my mom if i can miss classes. i live at home. they're gonna notice if i don't leave when i'm supposed to.)

::dances::

mommy said yes! whee! i love my mommy.

and again, yes, i'm 21 years old. yes, she will always be mommy. and yes, i will always ask her permission to do a lot of things, such as miss classes when i'm not sick.

so here's the deal, jack...

i shower. i get dressed. i go to the bank and deposit the bling, yo. i go to the healthfood store and get vitamin c. i come home. finish reading the price while watching otl again. start drafting that paper. (topic: Miller's use of the American Family to destroy the American Dream as seen in All My Sons, Death of a Salesman, and The Price). get the articles needed for my american lit paper. go to my night class.

dance.

because it's all about dancing, yo.

dude...

totally forgot exactly how sick and gruesome and disturbing the video for 'Happiness in Slavery' was what with the man being tortured to death in horrible, explicit ways.

damn, it's a great video.

so yeah. instead of doing what i'm supposed to be doing, i'm downloading more videoes from nine inch nails and marilyn manson. you know, the stuff mtv won't show.

currently watching man that you fear. showed mom head like a hole and the fragile live from the vmas. she's not interested in seeing many of the others.

can't blame her.

will show her JGP from the Billboard awards and the 2001 VMA performance she missed.

huh? whoda thunk it?

We think you are Straight
and we are 53.80% confident with our answer
OK, I know what you're thinking. I guessed you were straight, big deal. It's a safe bet, since the majority of the population is straight. Especially since people like the guy on the right claim to be straight. If he's heterosexual, anyone could be. That's what's so great about America.
But hey, I gave it a shot. What do you want me to do, anyhow?

take the quiz yourself.

and for the record. i am not straight.

stupid quiz.

::grumbles::

oh. so i did my errands. health food store, bank, pet store (guinea pig food and a toy for iya since she was with me and grabbed it off the shelf), and dunkin donuts. i finally got my damned dunkacchino!

I can't believe I did this but I did. I haven't been able to get this out of my head. I am SO going to hell for this. I know I've said that before, but I'm sorry, this is a eternity in the horrors of the underworld offense. And yes, I did this in class and post class instead of writing the essay due tomorrow. And I am leaving this as a public entry and also not doing a cutaway so all of my friends can read it even though I know I will get flack for this from them. Partially for even owning Britney and also for comparing her to Janet.

I give you....

The Queen of Pop vs. The Pop Princess: A look at the similarities between Janet Jackson's albums and Britney Spears' album Britney (and yes, i know that janet isn't really the queen of pop but it fit! shut up!)

For the past decade and a half, Janet Jackson has been releasing albums and making music. Her style has changed but for the most part, her last three albums Janet, The Velvet Rope, and All For You¸ have been very heavy on the rock inspired guitar and angry, very angry lyrics. Britney Spears’ new album has a number of similarities to what Janet has been doing for the past ten years. Now before you yell at me and call me insane, I actually analyzed this and thought waaaay too much about it since I picked up Britney the other day. I can’t believe I’ve even done this and I apologize ahead of time. I’ve spent way too much time lately analyzing plays, stories, and poems in school. I do it with everything now. Just ask Anna about how we formulated the theory that Celebrity is actually an homage to U2’s Pop. Also, I don’t know the correct musical terms for a lot of these things I’m talking about.

I believe that it’s possible Britney knows that these similiarities occurred and it’s possible that she actually meant a number of them. There are lyrical similarities that will be pointed out on a song by song basis (well three of them) as well as just singing similiarities. Janet has the ability to sing harshly, biting off her words to bring her point across. This technique (used by many others, I know) gives more weight to the lyrics she is singing. Britney’s vocal style in this album is very different than on Baby, One More Time and Oops. She’s taken a lesson from Janet and she’s singing in a much angrier voice, her lyrics carrying more force because of the way she’s singing the words. Also, someone finally told her that she sounds better singing songs with a harder sound in the actual music. Again, it’s something that I believe can be compared to Janet. In her past three albums, Janet has used a combination of R&B and rock stylings to create a distinct sound that I feel Britney is emulating on this album.

First: Lonely vs. What About (from The Velvet Rope)

In Lonely, Britney even sounds like Janet does in What About. Both of them rip into the chorus. The guitar in the chorus sounds extremely similar and the lyrics for the chorus even seem to echo each other.

Janet: What about the times you lied to me? What about the times you said no one would want me? What about all the shit you've done to me? What about that? What about that?
What about the times you yelled at me? What about the times I cried, you wouldn't even hold me? What about those things? What about that? What about that?

Britney: Think of all the time that I've wasted Think of all the times that I took you back Ain't no way I'll be lonely I don't wanna let you back in Let's just face it (face it)
Better off alone and I won't turn back Thought that I would be lonely I don't wanna let you back in

Both of them are using the chorus to throw the past into the face of the “man” that they are singing about and the relationship they have both suffered through. The use of the word “times” in both songs lead the listener to believe they (Janet and Britney) have long suffered with this person.

Second: Boys vs. If (from Janet)

This is a little more tenuous than my comparasion of Lonely and What About, however it’s still something that can be done. The vocal styling in these two songs are similar. Britny and Janet both use a lower singing voice and cut off the words. If is a much more explicit song because frankly, Britney can’t get away with singing the same type of lyrics as Janet. However, both of them are talking about searching out a man and setting their sights on them. Britney manages to pull off the same concept in a slightly less sexual way however the moaning and meaning behind the song is obvious. Both of them are talking about the control they would have if he was with them.

Janet: If I was your girl Oh the things I’d do to you I'd make you call out my name
I'd ask who it belongs to If I was your woman, The things I'd do to you But I'm not, so I can't, Then I won't But, if I was your girl

Britney: Boys! Sometimes a girl just needs one (I like that) Boys! (I like that)
To love her and to hold Boys! And when a girl is with one (it's gonna turn me on)
Boys! Then she's in control!

Third: Overprotected vs. Control (from Control)

Both of these songs have the same message behind them. Janet’s Control is about how she was taking control of her life and the whole album Control was about getting control away from her father. She sings about having her own mind and making her own decisions. Overprotected is Britney’s Control but she doesn’t have the answers yet. She asks for help in the song while Janet knows how to take control of her life.

Janet: I've got my own mind Wanna make my own decisions When it has to do with my life I wanna be the one in control I'm in control And I love it, that’s right Control, now I've got a lot Control, now I'm more grown up I'm in control Don't make me lose it

Britney: I don't need nobody Tellin me just what I wanna What I what what I'm gonna
Do about my destiny I Say No, No Ain't nobody tell me just what I wanna do, do
I'm so fed up with people telling me to be Someone else but me What am I to do with my life (You will find out don't worry) How Am I supposed to know what's right? (You just got to do it your way) I can't help the way I feel But my life has been so overprotected.

Britney is still conflicted because she doesn’t know the answers and wants guidance but she still wants to make her own decisions. It’s fairly obvious that on past albums, she’s sung songs that she didn’t necessarily like but was told to sing because she was supposed to be a certain way. The same thing happened when Janet recorded Dream Street. She recorded and sang what her parents wanted her to sing. The album Control was about Janet taking the control back in her life. Britney seems to be Britney’s attempt to do the same thing by having songs that she co-wrote and not being so sugary-sweet in her lyrics.
