Blah. Stuff.

“Justin is dating Janet Jackson.”

Chris grunted and looked at JC over the top of his book. “Good for J.”

“That’s what I said,” JC folded the newspaper and put it on the table. “What are you reading?”

Play the Piano Drunk Like a Percussion Instrument Until the Fingers Begin to Bleed a Bit,” said Chris dryly, closing the book and setting it on the table as well. “I stole it from a Barnes and Noble in Seattle.”

“You could pay for books,” said JC, rolling his eyes. “You are a millionare.”

”Books shouldn’t be owned,” Chris reached for a bagel, taking an angry bite. “Don’t get me started on this, JC.”

JC picked up Chris’s book and flipped through it. “Perhaps poetry that makes you angry isn’t the best thing for you to read on a Sunday morning.”

Chris snatched the book back, settling it protectively on his lap. “You read the newspaper on Sunday mornings. That makes you angry.”

Their waitress came by, refilling coffee mugs and disappearing again. JC and Chris barely noticed her.

“I read the newspaper to keep myself informed about the world,” JC added sugar and cream to his coffee, stirring it idyly. “It’s a good habit.”

“You read the paper every Sunday when we have coffee together,” said Chris. “And all you ever read to me is who Justin is dating this week when we all know that he isn’t dating any of them because he has a boyfriend that he’s happy with.”

“The last time I read you anything beside the gossip column, you told me that politics angers up your blood.”

“You know,” Chris took another angry bite of his bagel, his jaw working as he glared at JC. “You’re a sucky boyfriend.”

“Hmm,” JC finished his coffee. “Right. I’m going out of town this week. I’ll be back on Saturday.”

“I’ll pick you up at 10 on Sunday then,” said Chris, digging money out of his pocket, unfolding and flattening the crushed bills. “Have fun fucking what’s her name.”

“Mariana,” JC tossed a couple of dollars on the table. “You know her name.”

“Right,” Chris nodded, opening his book again. “She is legal, isn’t she?”

JC sighed and got up, picking up his paper. “I’ll see you next week, Chris.”

Chris watched him go, his eyes following JC’s ass as he walked out of the coffeeshop, leaving Chris alone with his book.
