These are getting done in bunches. SGA is up first. :)
Jenny Hsu was used to working under extreme conditions. The food situation on Atlantis had become grim on more than one occasion. The lack of normal Earth ingredients was trying. Having to listen to Dr. McKay’s long, detailed list of his food allergies on a bi-weekly basis was almost enough to make her get on the Daedelus each and every time it showed up.
But trying to learn how to feed Ronon Dex was more than trying. The first few weeks he had been on Atlantis, she had tried to be friendly and find out if there were any foods that he particularly enjoyed eating. She rarely got more than a grunt out of him as he scooped whatever it was on his tray into his mouth with his fingers.
Then one day he had showed up in the kitchen, holding out a piece of paper with a hastily scribbled recipe on it. Jenny took it with trepidation because as far as she knew, he didn’t know how to write in English. The writing was obviously Dr. Zelenka’s (who was a very nice man and she really didn’t understand how he could stomach spending so much time with Dr. McKay) and the recipe was something she could make without a problem.
The next evening Jenny handed Ronon a tray with his special meal and got a half-smile. After that, Ronon began to talk to her and often gave her recipes written in Dr. Zelenka’s hand.
Five months after Ronon arrived on Atlantis, he asked if he could use the kitchen to make a special meal for a friend. Jenny knew from the gossip that everyone assumed Ronon had a yen for Teyla Emmagen, but Jenny knew better. Ronon spent entirely too much time trailing after Dr. Zelenka for the friend to be anyone else.
Jenny closed off the kitchen one afternoon and watched as Ronon clumsily chopped vegetables and stewed meat. She offered him help, but he didn’t want any until he looked at a recipe written in Dr. Zelenka’s handwriting for bread.
Ronon handed her the recipe and quietly asked if she could teach him how to make bread. Ten minutes later, they both were kneading bread and chatting about Dr. Zelenka’s floppy hair and that one time Jenny had threatened to put citrus in Dr. McKay’s coffee if he didn’t leave her alone.
Ronon turned out to be a quick study and his loaf of bread was as good as Jenny’s. She smiled happily as he carried away a very full tray of food that he had made almost entirely on his own.
Jenny decided that learning how to feed Ronon Dex was actually one of the easier jobs she had attempted since arriving on Atlantis. Now if only she could figure out how to shut Dr. McKay up about his food allergies.
Somehow she knew that wouldn’t be so easy.
The first time Radek got to go back to Earth was during their third year on Atlantis. His daughter Mila was turning 13 and he had asked to be able to return to Prague for such a special occasion.
John came with him, claiming that he needed a break from being the military commander of Atlantis and really, Prague and a 13 year-old girl's birthday party sounded like a fantastic vacation. Radek had been skeptical of John's enthusiasm, but had agreed. It wasn't like he and John ever really got to spend time alone with each other on Atlantis. Besides, the Pegasus galaxy wasn't exactly ripe with resorts.
The flight to Prague was military and Radek spent most of it sleeping while John bugged the pilots and tried to remember how one actually flew a military cargo plane. There was a moment when Radek stepped off the plane on the runway and just stared at the sky. John had touched his back lightly and commented that it got easier after awhile.
Prague hadn't been home for nearly 8 years now, but Radek still calmly pointed out his favourite coffee shop and his first apartment to John as they made their way through the city. Helena, his ex-wife, lived outside the city in a small home that Radek paid for out of his salary from the SGC.
Mila was nothing like Radek remembered. The last time he had seen her, she was still wearing pigtails and playing with dolls. Now she had a short bob and talked on a cell phone the first twenty minutes after he and John had arrived at the house.
Helena had made quiet comments in Czech about John's unruly hair and his overt maleness until Radek told her to stop trying to run his life. They were divorced for a reason. After that things got a little fuzzy as he consumed massive amounts of alcohol and tried to get Mila to tell him a little about her life.
Mila ended up really liking John and spent the rest of the trip trying to cozy up to him while the three of them wandered around Prague in a vague sort of sight-seeing that didn't actually include many of the sights. There was a lot of really good food though.
Radek picked up a pack of Czech cigarettes and smoked them slowly, savoring the taste. John wrinkled his nose and asked Mila how to say smoking kills in Czech. It was surreal for Radek to be sitting in a coffee shop in Prague smoking a cigarette while his daughter laughed with his boyfriend.
Radek smiled across the table at John, meeting his eyes. Maybe it wasn't the vacation either of them had hoped for, but it worked. John seemed to be enjoying himself and seeing Mila for a few days was enough to keep Radek going.
When they arrived back on Atlantis, Radek overheard John telling Rodney all about Prague and how wonderful their vacation had been. Next time he got a vacation, Radek thought, he’d take John and Mila to Italy. He had always liked the Italian countryside.
It was late when Rodney woke up, disoriented, cold, and still tired. Or maybe it was just really early. Either way he was supposed be sleeping wrapped around a nice, warm John Sheppard.
That same John Sheppard who was supposed to be acting as Rodney's personal bed warmer and stuffed animal was sitting at the desk across the room, humming to himself and writing on a piece of paper.
Rodney wondered if it was weird that he knew exactly what John was doing instead of sleeping in bed with him. Math. When John couldn't sleep, he got up and did math problems until he was exhausted enough to fall asleep.
He knew John had a particular affection for the Millennium Problems, specifically the Yang-Mills Theory. Sometimes Rodney got hard thinking about John trying to figure out the mathematical basis for particle theory.
It wasn't weird. Okay, it *was* weird when Rodney had John go over his math while Rodney blew him. Mostly that was because Rodney always came listening to John's voice break while he talked about numbers.
"Hey," Rodney said softly from the bed, his voice scratchy. "It's late."
John turned to look at him, the pencil in his hand. "I'm restless."
Rodney threw back one side of the covers, patting the bed enticingly. "Come over here and I'll check your work for you."
