Joey taped up his last box, looking around the small apartment that was half-packed up. His half. His boxes were piled up and the makeshift bed on the couch that he'd been using for the past month and a half was still out, the sheets and blankets all messy. Those blankets and pillows were staying with Christina anyway.
He straightened up and walked into the kitchen to grab a beer. He twisted off the bottle cap and tossed it into the trash. He took a long drink of the beer, looking at a picture on the fridge from their wedding just two years before. Christina had jumped on his back, wedding dress and all, and he had given her a piggy back ride around the room to say hi to all the guests and collect the cards. AJ had taken that particular one and they looked so happy together.
That was a long time ago though and they definitely weren't happy anymore.
The front door opened and Joey looked in that direction even though he knew who it was. Christina stepped around the boxes, her backpack slung over her shoulder. Her long blonde hair was pulled back into a severe bun and she was wearing a suit and running sneakers. Joey looked away.
"I thought you were leaving today," Christina said wearily, leaning against the doorframe and looking at him.
Joey shruggeed and took another drink of his beer. "DIdn't get finished. I'll leave tomorrow."
"You said that yesterday."
"I'm leaving tomorrow, Chrissy. You don't need to give me this shit, okay. I'll be out of your hair soon and you never have to see me again. I promise."
Christina bristled a little, her gaze becoming even colder. "I have a paper to write. I'll be in the den."
Joey grunted his acknowledgement, draining the beer. "I'll make dinner or something."
Christina paused, then nodded slightly before walking out of the kitchen.
Joey closed his eyes and rested his forehead against the cool refrigerator.

There had never been a time that Joey could remember when Christina wasn't in his life. The four of them, himself, Christina, Justin, and Britney had been inseperable from birth basically. It didn't even phase him when he and Christina started dating. It just seemed right.
They dated from seventh grade on and they always had a solid relationship.
They fought but everyone fought.
They were in love.

"Joey!" Jeff stuck his head out of their bedroom. Joey didn't move, headphones firmly planted over his ears as he read a book. Jeff rolled his eyes and walked into the living room/kitchen area. He pulled Joey's headphones off and stuck the phone in his face. "Christina's on the phone."
Joey jumped a little but took the phone. "Hey, baby," he said, a little distracted. "How you doing?"
"I'm good," Christina said, her voice bubbly. "Got an A on my sociology paper."
"That's great."
Neither of them said anything, the silence uncomfortable. Joey turned another page in his book.
"I'm coming home next weekend for Maggie's birthday."
Joey nodded, half-forgetting that they were on the phone and Christina couldn't see him. "That's great."
Silence again.
"Are you even listening to me?"
"That's great."
"Joey!" Christina said angrily. "If this is a bad time, just tell me. Don't fucking ignore me."
Joey sighed and closed his book. "I'm sorry. I'm studying for a test I have tonight."
"What class?"
"Methods in Teaching. I told you about this class."
Christina nodded, making a face at her roommate, which made her laugh. "I remember. So you ready for it?"
"Yeah. I'm just going over some stuff again. I'll do fine."
Christina chuckled at that. "I remember hearing that all through high school."
Joey clenched his jaw. "This time I mean it."
"I know you do, baby," said Christina in a patronizing tone. "It's probably a nice, easy class. Right on your level."
"Look," Joey balled up his hand into a fist, trying not to yell. "How about not making shots at my intelligance? I don't really feel like getting into an argument right now because I'm not at Princeton and I'm not a Political Science major like you are."
Christina was silent for a long moment. "Why don't I let you go? I'll talk to you later."
"Yeah. Okay."
Silence.
"I love you, Joey."
Joey paused for the briefest of moments. "I love you too."
